The Magic Rectangle

Good news! The wonderful, independent literary press Folded Word has accepted my prose poetry chapbook The Magic Rectangle for publication! This juicy little nugget of a book will appear in 2017. Folded Word produces truly beautiful books and pours heart and soul into the craft of book-making. They even offer subscriptions to their chapbook series. The artful calligraphy of Editor-in-Chief J.S. Graustein graces many a cover of their artisanal books. Tasty!

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the form, a prose poem is a poem written in paragraph form, but loaded with the vivid imagery and linguistic calisthenics of poetry. It’s a hybrid that packs the best of both worlds into a tight little bonbon of literary yumminess. I call this collection The Magic Rectangle because the prose poem is a tiny rectangular playground where anything can happen…and usually will. It’s a great form for readers who are intimidated by line breaks and less familiar with the mechanics of poetry. Mostly I think of it as a mini-vacation for the imagination. My favorite practitioner of the form is David Shumate.

So stay tuned for more updates and sneak peeks. In the meantime, please visit the Folded Word site and treat yourself to a literary feast. I highly recommend the Joseph Hutchison titles, but any of their offerings are sure to please! Meanwhile…here’s to poetry:

cheers

Cheers!
